About

Voice Of Merrill.com was created as an online supplement to the Voice Of Merrill radio program currently airing on 1320 KLWN in Lawrence, Kansas.  The radio show features Chris Merrill, a moderate conservative living in an ultra liberal college town.  The contrast always makes for an entertaining, interesting and informative daily show.  Infotainment is the order of the day, every day on the Voice of Merrill, on air at 1320 AM and online at KLWN.com.

Chris Merrill grew up in the rural West Michigan town of Scottville.  He graduated from Mason County Central and then attended college at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, MI and trained briefly as an EMT at West Shore Community College in Scottville.  Conservative values were engrained early from his parents, Rod and Jan.  The family ran a small hometown electrical business, Merrill Electric, until the recession of 1991 combined with the prospect of new electrical supply warehouses, box hardware stores and Wal-Mart made the business no longer viable.

Chris got into radio at WKLA-FM in Ludington, Michigan in the winter of 2000.  He began as a board operator for local high school basketball games and quickly moved up to filling in on news shifts.  In August of 2000, Chris took the lead on a morning show at a company owned oldies station, WMTE-FM, in Manistee, MI.  After cutting his teeth in local radio, Chris took a position in February ‘02 with Waitt Radio Networks in Avon, Colorado.  Waitt moved their home offices to Omaha, Nebraska in the fall of 2002 where Chris lived for the next year.  It was because of the satellite radio business that Chris met his future wife, LuAnn.

LuAnn Merrill and her three beautiful children were living in Chino Valley, Arizona when LuAnn sent an e-mail to Chris at Waitt Radio Networks in January, 2003.  She was requesting a song by the Corrs and mistyped the artist name so it looked all too similar to a Colorado beer brewer.  E-mail banter began and continued until their first meeting in February when LuAnn was in the mid-west.  They began dating long distance.  It didn’t take long for Chris to realize LuAnn was the one.  On July 4th, 2003 Chris proposed to LuAnn.  She accepted.  He left the satellite radio network that October and moved to Arizona to be with his betrothed and her wonderful kids.  The Merrill family united in June of 2004.  They have lived happily ever after.

In Arizona, Chris worked for KNOT-FM.  Merrill in the Morning was born.  KNOT was a country music station in the wonderful resort town of Prescott, Arizona.  In February 2005, KNOT was sold to a Flagstaff radio group who changed the format to Lite Rock.  At that time, Chris decided to move on to the next radio opportunity before his soul was slowly sapped by Michael Bolton and Celine Dion.

The Merrill’s moved to Jayhawk country in March of 2005 to take over the morning show at KLZR, Lazer 105-9. He’s been doing the Merrill in the Morning show ever since.  Great Plains media recognized Merrill’s talent and passion and put him on KLWN where he has been the most talked about radio personality in Lawrence’s history.  Chris and his family are always appreciative of the support they receive from nearly everyone they meet and are proud to be a part of the Lawrence community.
