Drama

Not since the Great Depression have Americans taken more from the “system” than they paid in; until now.  The Washington Times has published a story outlining the growing dependency on the Federal Government by the American people.  A society of people dependent on a larger centralized government is not a free society.

The Senate is currently weighing a bill that would extend unemployment benefits to the jobless until the end of the year.  This is an additional 10 months of benefits to those currently on the unemployment rolls.  While the motivation is noble, the outcome only serves to further individual citizens to rely on the Government.  The divide between “haves” and “have nots” grows.  The situation begins to resemble the divides described in Karl Marx Communist Manifesto between the Proletariat and the Bourgeoisie classes.

Unemployment is a huge problem for this country.  The outcome of the fall elections will be founded in the ability of Washington to show progress in reducing the rate of unemployment.  The balance between supporting those befallen unfortunate circumstances and dispersing the tendency to become complacent in accepting welfare is delicate.  One thing is certain, the bad habit of dependency must be broken, and broken quickly for this country to once again thrive.
