Perception is Everything

Kansas House Speaker Mike O’Neal is catching grief from the Democratic Legislators. That, in itself, is no surprise. However, this time, the Dems may have a point.
O’Neal is a smart and savvy lawyer from Hutchinson. He’s leading a lawsuit now that represents a gathering of professional businesses vs. the State of Kansas Legislature. In effect, Mike O’Neal is taking money from a group of trades to sue his own gang. Whether his actions are legal, moral or ethical, the perception of the public is that O’Neal’s involvement in the lawsuit is a conflict of interest.
Nationwide, citizens are turning against politicians of both parties. Both parties across the country must raise the perception of their respective political groups. O’Neal’s participation in the lawsuit against the Legislature does nothing to help the State’s perception of Republicans in Kansas. It does just the opposite. Republicans can’t afford the negative publicity now, and Kansans shouldn’t accept a politician fighting the minutia of law when the bigger picture of transparency in Government is at stake.
